Final Reflection

            Since this was my first semester of City College, I feared the requirements of writing a college essay. Although I still have this fear, I gained more confidence in what I write. My first essay to me felt different to the rest, but I have seen how it intertwined with the other essays. I feel that that essay, the Literary Narrative Essay, was my worst one of the semester. I am not saying that it is horrible, but I felt that I made more mistakes in this than the other essays. I then used the syllabus to understand what was needed in order to create a stronger essay, such as the text that was suggested to understand better on how to write. I also went to the PAL center to get more help from my tutor, Kiara, who I must thank because she helped me understand how to get information and create stronger sentences throughout each essay.

            The Exploratory essay was one of the hardest essays in this semester, mainly because I did not know much about writing and explaining a topic without creating an argument. This was something I had done in my freshman year of high school, but it was terrible in my opinion. After writing it and getting the grade, I got more confident on my writing, and used that to create the Research Essay, which I had to prepare a lot for so that it would turn out to be strong. When writing the final essays, I began to learn how to critique my own work, finding mistakes I would not find before and teaching myself how to write not for myself, but for the audience. Overall, I gained more knowledge throughout this semester, thanks to both my professor and my tutor, and learned not only how to write strong essays, but also how to critique myself.

Journal Entry #6

                 The film Front of the Class demonstrated the lifestyle of a teacher who suffers from Tourette’s syndrome, which is viewed very strictly in America’s society and is very misunderstood, and through that viewpoint they argue that there is more to being a teacher than just school work. It talks about what an educator is, which is a teacher, but who mentors someone through emotional points. This can be seen when Brad helps a child who could not read well, giving his point of view on how reading is for himself, and teaching him through a bond they made. Teachers nowadays have been trying to do this as well, trying to find ways to help students who have different problems that most people have, and focusing to educate those students. This film brings a more brighter side to what teachers can do, and how they could affect the lives of students who go to school for education.          ...

             When reading back Still Separate by Jonothan Kozol, I realized how much segregation still lives inside the United States. Although this is not something that has been never talked about, segregated schools have been known to be an ongoing situation that society has faced throughout many generations. I was mainly surprised with the schools that was mentioned that where in New York City, which is known to be very diverse. It mentioned the school Martin Luther King Jr. school downtown. Although this school is in a pretty safe area and has the name of the man who advocated for equality of races, many parents are still scared to have their kids sent into that school because of its demographic.             Personally, I saw this throughout my high school, being mostly filled with white students.
