The
American Dream: The Change Needed in Gun Control
Thesis statement: Due mass shootings
beginning to rise and become more frequent than before, society should act and
create awareness to prevent more from happening.
Gary, Kleck, et. al. “Does Gun
Control Reduce Violent Crime?” Criminal
Justice Review (Sage
Publications), vol. 41, no. 4, 2016, pp. 488-513.
Kleck
Gary, along with other members of the article, conducted an experiment in which
they checked different cities in the United States to see if gun control does
reduce violent crime. In this research, they discovered that these gun control
laws that the state has put show no difference of crimes in the past years. The
studied different cities by their population, comparing the amount of crimes in
small cities to the amount of crimes in large cities. They did, however, noted
small effects of the laws, such as the ban of purchases of guns by alcoholics
and the requirement of a license.
This
article is needed to show the different arguments when it comes to the topic of
gun laws, and this article proves the side that there is a problem with gun
control laws. Most of the article consists of variables used to understand the
research they were conducting, the theory they had, and more of their knowledge
to this problem, which is not needed for my paper. This could help keep a
balance argument to the paper, but I will be using the next article to prove
that there needs to be more laws.
Gius, Mark. “Gun Law and Crime.” Significance, vol. 11, no. 2, 2014, pp.
6-8.
This
article gives a more background knowledge to all the mass shootings that has
passed by in American history. It tells the story of each shootings, from
Columbine to Sandy Hook, and shows the process of how all this happened. It
also gives a reason to why all of these have happened, showing the history of
America as well as the culture it creates. Gius also examines the affects that
all these bans on the most lethal weapons has on the crime rate.
This
is useful to help understand why these mass shootings have happened in America.
It also gives a more background to the culture that America lives by, to which
might spark the mass shootings from the very beginning, and could be used to
help understand the culture of America. There are some things that are not
needed, such as the variables he uses, and the amount of data. He does although
stay unbiased throughout the article, which is great when it comes to
historical background information.
Ratliff, Bradley C. “The Second
Amendment: An Analysis of Interpretations.” Appalachian
Journal of Law, vol. 15, no. 1, 2016, pp. 83-97.
This article gives a
more background to the amendment that creates all of the laws and is used in
all of the cases that consists of guns: the second amendment. Throughout the
article, it discusses the history of the amendment, the process of creating
this amendment that would live on for many generations. It also gives many
interpretations to the amendment which leads to how the laws were made. There
are many instances in the article where they explain how this amendment
connects to all the mass shootings happening specifically in the United States.
This is going to be
perfect for the history part of my research paper, which explains the
background of the topic which is gun control. I believe that all this article
is going to fit right in with the first body paragraph, since the second
amendment is important and is used in all of the debates that surrounds guns.
This is also helpful to help those that do not fully understand the amendment
and the meaning behind it. It also gives a start to the whole research paper.
Vernick,
Jon, et. al. “Background Checks for All Gun Buyers and Gun Violence Restraining
Orders: State
Efforts to Keep Guns from High-Risk Persons.” The Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics, vol. 45, no. 1, 2017,
pp. 98-102.
Jon
Vernick created this article to bring awareness to the possible flaws of gun
purchasing process in America. He gives background information on the laws
behind the screening process and online purchasing. Vernick argues that there
needs to be legal action to prevent any more gun violence from ever happening.
By doing this, he brings up examples of laws passed that prevents anyone with a
high risk of disturbing the peace, which has evidently worked as stated in his
research.
This
work is great for arguing against the gun laws that protect these guns
purchasing problems. There are specific parts that I could use for the paper,
such as the law/program that was used to help stop high risk people from
obtaining a weapon. Most of the article consists of background history of gun
purchasing, which could help my paper to better understand what is the
screening process. This is a great article to use for my own side, which also
has counter arguments for the other side.
